“CA takes 4 years” is the short answer. Here's the honest, stage-by-stage one.
Foundation, Intermediate, a 2-year Articleship, and Final — each with its own study period, eligibility rules, and realistic timeline. What actually happens at each stage, and how long it takes when things go as planned versus when they don't.
The honest version of “how long does CA take”
The figures below are ICAI's minimum study periods and mandatory training duration under the New Scheme of Education and Training (effective July 2023, current for 2026) — not a guarantee. Re-attempts at any level extend this. Pass rates at each stage are typically well under 50%, so the 4 to 4.5-year figure assumes each level clears on the first or second attempt. Always cross-check current requirements at icai.org, since ICAI updates exam scheme details periodically.
Foundation to Final, stage by stage
CA Foundation
Open to students after Class 12 (provisional registration allowed after Class 10). Four papers — two subjective, two objective (MCQ) — each worth 100 marks. Held three times a year: January, May/June, and September.
What's inside: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, Business Economics.
CA Intermediate
Entered either after clearing Foundation, or directly after graduation (Direct Entry route, with minimum required marks). Six papers across two groups of three. Considered a significant step up in depth from Foundation.
What's inside: Advanced Accounting, Corporate & Other Laws, Cost & Management Accounting, Taxation, Auditing & Ethics, Financial & Strategic Management.
Articleship (Practical Training)
Mandatory hands-on training under a practising Chartered Accountant, covering real accounting, audit, and tax work. Can begin after clearing at least one group of Intermediate. This is the longest single stage of the entire course.
What's inside: Supervised work in accounting, auditing, direct and indirect taxation, and financial reporting at a CA firm or under a practising CA.
CA Final
Six papers across two groups, plus mandatory Self-Paced Online Modules (SPOM). Eligibility requires clearing both Intermediate groups and completing Advanced ICITSS. Widely considered the hardest stage — pass rates are historically low.
What's inside: Financial Reporting, Advanced Financial Management, Advanced Auditing, Direct & International Tax, Indirect Tax Laws, plus an elective paper.
ICAI Membership
Once both CA Final groups are cleared and Articleship is complete, candidates apply for ICAI membership and can use the "CA" designation. This is what the 4 to 4.5-year figure is actually counting toward.
What's inside: Membership application, certificate of practice (if applicable), and formal recognition as a Chartered Accountant.

Foundation route vs. Direct Entry
Which one applies depends entirely on where you're starting from.
| Route | Who it's for | Total duration |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation route | After Class 12 — register for Foundation, then Intermediate, Articleship, Final | ~4 to 4.5 years |
| Direct Entry route | Graduates (commerce with required %, or non-commerce with a higher threshold) — skip Foundation, register directly for Intermediate | ~3 to 3.5 years |
