“CA is only for Commerce students” is one of the most repeated myths out there. It's false.
There's no stream restriction on the CA Foundation route at all — Science, Arts, and Commerce students register the same way. The only place your stream actually matters is if you're trying to skip Foundation after graduation. Here's exactly how that works.
Yes — and it's more common than the myth suggests
ICAI places no restriction on which stream you studied in Class 11 and 12. Science and Arts students register for CA Foundation exactly the same way Commerce students do. The one place your background actually matters is Direct Entry after graduation, where non-Commerce graduates need a slightly higher percentage than Commerce graduates — not a ban, just a higher bar. Always verify current thresholds at icai.org, since ICAI updates these periodically.
How Science and Arts students actually get in
CA Foundation — right after Class 12
Any student who has passed (or is appearing for) Class 12, in any stream, can register for CA Foundation. Provisional registration is even allowed after Class 10, though the exam itself can only be attempted after Class 12.
What changes by stream: Nothing in eligibility. Commerce students may find Accounting and Business Laws slightly more familiar going in; Science and Arts students typically need a bit more early time on those two papers specifically.
Direct Entry — after graduation
Graduates can skip Foundation entirely and register directly for CA Intermediate — but the minimum aggregate required depends on stream. This is the only stage where being non-Commerce genuinely changes the requirement.
What's required:Commerce graduates/postgraduates need 55% aggregate. Science, Arts, Engineering or any other non-Commerce graduates/postgraduates need 60% aggregate. Candidates who've cleared ICSI or ICMAI Intermediate qualify regardless of percentage.

Structured coaching built for Science, Arts and Commerce students alike.
Eligible doesn't mean equally easy from day one
A Commerce graduate walks into Intermediate with prior exposure to accounting, tax and business law concepts. A Science or Arts graduate is eligible on exactly the same terms, but should genuinely budget more time for Accounting and Law in the first attempt — not because the door is smaller, but because the starting point is different.
CA content is taught from scratch either way
Every CA subject — including Accounting — is taught assuming no prior specialised knowledge, because the syllabus has to work for Commerce, Science, Arts, and Direct Entry students all at once. Plenty of Science and Arts-background CAs, including some rank holders, started exactly where you are now.
Foundation route vs. Direct Entry
Which one applies depends entirely on where you're starting from.
| Route | Who it's for | Total duration |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation route | After Class 12 — register for Foundation, then Intermediate, Articleship, Final | ~4 to 4.5 years |
| Direct Entry route | Graduates (commerce with required %, or non-commerce with a higher threshold) — skip Foundation, register directly for Intermediate | ~3 to 3.5 years |
