B.Com done? Here's whether you can skip CA Foundation.

With the right B.Com marks, ICAI lets you register straight for CA Intermediate. Below that mark, Foundation is the way in. Both routes lead to the same Intermediate and Final exams — the difference is the time, the eligibility, and the first hurdle you face.

The short answer

Your B.Com marks decide the route

Under ICAI's Direct Entry scheme, commerce graduates with at least 55% aggregate can register directly for CA Intermediate and skip Foundation entirely. Below 55%, you take the Foundation route. Direct Entry doesn't make the CA exams any easier — it only removes the first stage. Eligibility rules and fees are updated by ICAI from time to time, so confirm the current criteria at icai.org before registering.

The routes in detail

What each route actually involves

ARoute

The Foundation route

Open to all · Adds one stage

Register for CA Foundation, complete a minimum 4-month study period, and clear four papers — two subjective, two objective (MCQ). The exam is held three times a year: January, May/June, and September. Once cleared, you register for Intermediate and follow the same path as everyone else.

What's inside: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, Business Economics.

Note: As a B.Com graduate, much of this will feel familiar — the challenge is exam technique and speed, not new concepts.

The Direct Entry route

55%+ commerce aggregate · Skips Foundation

Register for CA Intermediate directly on the basis of your degree marks. You can register provisionally in your final year, but you must show proof of passing before appearing for the exam. Intermediate has six papers across two groups, with a minimum 8-month study period from registration.

What's inside:Advanced Accounting, Corporate & Other Laws, Cost & Management Accounting, Taxation, Auditing & Ethics, Financial & Strategic Management.

Note: You skip Foundation, but Intermediate is a significant step up in depth — plan for it as the real start of your CA preparation.

  • You want the shortest route to the CA designation
  • You're ready to study at Intermediate depth from day one

The Foundation route makes sense if…

  • Your B.Com aggregate is below 55% — it’s your route in
  • You want a gentler first step into ICAI’s exam pattern
  • You'd rather build exam confidence before Intermediate
  • You can afford the extra time the extra stage adds

Common questions

Answered before you ask

Can a B.Com graduate skip CA Foundation?

Yes, if you scored at least 55% aggregate in your B.Com. Under ICAI's Direct Entry route, eligible commerce graduates register directly for CA Intermediate without appearing for CA Foundation.

What if my B.Com aggregate is below 55%?

Direct Entry isn't available, so you would take the Foundation route: register for CA Foundation (your Class 12 qualifies you), complete the 4-month minimum study period, clear the exam, then move on to Intermediate.

Is Direct Entry easier than the Foundation route?

No. Direct Entry only skips the Foundation stage. The Intermediate and Final papers, syllabus, and passing standards are identical for both routes.

Can I register while still in the final year of B.Com?

Yes, final-year students can register provisionally for Intermediate under Direct Entry, but you must submit proof of passing your degree before appearing for the exam.

How much time does Direct Entry save?

Roughly a year. The Foundation route takes about 4 to 4.5 years in total if each level is cleared on schedule, against about 3 to 3.5 years via Direct Entry. Re-attempts at any level extend both.

Do Direct Entry students still need ICITSS before Articleship?

Yes. ICITSS (orientation and IT training) is mandatory for every CA student before starting Articleship, whichever route you enter through.
