The route, step by step

Seven steps from Class 12 to Chartered Accountant

Any stream — Commerce, Science or Arts — can start CA Foundation right after 12th with 50% aggregate. No graduation degree needed before you begin.

1Register

Register for CA Foundation

ICAI · After Class 12 · 4-month lead time

Register with ICAI after Class 12 boards, or provisionally right after appearing for them. Registration must be completed at least 4 months before the exam attempt you're targeting.

Eligibility: Commerce, Science or Arts stream, 50% aggregate (varies slightly by board).

Tip: Register provisionally the moment your 12th boards finish — don't wait for results, to avoid missing the 4-month window.
2Foundation

Clear the CA Foundation exam

4 papers · Twice a year

Four papers — Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, and Business Economics — held in May/June and November/December each year.

Best for: Building the accounting and quant fundamentals every later CA paper builds on.

Tip: No attempt limit, but your registration is valid for only 3 years — plan your attempts accordingly.
3Intermediate

Register & clear CA Intermediate

2 groups · 6 papers

After Foundation, register for Intermediate — six papers across two groups, covering Accounting, Law, Taxation, Costing, Audit, and Financial Management.

Best for: The stage most students treat as the real turning point — clearing at least one group unlocks articleship.

Tip: Clear both groups together where possible — it shortens your overall timeline to ICAI membership.
4Articleship

Complete 2-year articleship

Mandatory · Practical training

After passing at least one Intermediate group, begin a mandatory 2-year articleship under a practicing CA — this is where real audit, tax and accounting experience is gained.

Best for: Turning exam knowledge into the practical experience ICAI requires before membership.

Tip: Choose a firm with varied client work (audit, tax, and advisory) — it broadens your CA Final case exposure too.
5Final

Clear the CA Final exam

Advanced papers · Last 6 months of articleship

CA Final can be attempted during the last 6 months of articleship. It covers advanced Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management, Audit, Law, and Tax.

Best for: Students who use ongoing articleship work to reinforce Final-level concepts in real time.

Tip: Start CA Final prep alongside articleship rather than after — the overlap saves months.
6Training

Complete ICITSS / GMCS training

Soft skills · IT training

Mandatory ICITSS and GMCS modules — covering IT skills and professional soft skills — run alongside articleship and must be completed before membership.

Best for: Meeting a formal ICAI requirement that's easy to overlook amid exam prep.

Tip: Book these training slots early in your articleship — batches fill up close to CA Final attempts.
7Membership

Apply for ICAI membership

You're now a Chartered Accountant

Once CA Final and articleship are both complete, apply for ICAI membership — this is the step that officially makes you a Chartered Accountant.

Best for: The finish line — from here you can enter practice, join a firm, or move into corporate finance.

Tip: Decide practice vs. industry before you apply — it shapes which post-membership certifications to pursue next.
Where it leads

CA salary & career scope

Freshers typically start between ₹6–10 LPA in India, with senior CAs, CFOs, and partners earning significantly more over time. Career paths open up across public practice, corporate finance, taxation, audit, and consulting.

Staying on track

The roadmap only works if you pace it right

Most delays in the CA journey come from registration deadlines missed, not exam difficulty. A few habits keep the 4.5–5 year timeline realistic instead of stretching into seven or eight.

  • Register for Foundation within 4 months of your target attempt
  • Track your 3-year Foundation registration validity closely
  • Start articleship the moment one Intermediate group clears
  • Begin CA Final prep during articleship, not after it ends
  • Book ICITSS/GMCS slots early — don't leave them for the last month

Common questions

Answered before you ask

Can I become a CA directly after 12th without graduation?

Yes. The CA Foundation route is designed exactly for this — you register with ICAI after Class 12 and don't need a graduation degree first. Graduates who skip Foundation instead use the separate Direct Entry route into CA Intermediate.

Is Maths compulsory to become a CA?

No. Students from Commerce, Science or Arts can pursue CA, including those without Maths in Class 12 — CA Foundation's Quantitative Aptitude paper is built to be accessible without a Maths background.

How long does it take to become a CA after 12th?

Roughly 4.5 to 5 years from Class 12 to ICAI membership, covering CA Foundation, CA Intermediate, a mandatory 2-year articleship, and CA Final — the fastest official route into the profession.

How many attempts are allowed for CA Foundation?

There's no cap on the number of attempts, but your CA Foundation registration stays valid for 3 years and needs to be renewed if you haven't cleared it by then.

What is articleship and why is it mandatory?

Articleship is a mandatory 2-year practical training period under a practicing Chartered Accountant, undertaken after clearing at least one group of CA Intermediate. It's where real audit, tax and accounting experience is gained before you're eligible for ICAI membership.
