The short answer

Salary isn't one number — but the pattern is clear

A viral claim earlier in 2026 suggested CA freshers were starting on ₹3–5 lakh a year. ICAI's own Secretary publicly rebutted this in May 2026, pointing to the 64th Campus Placement Programme's average of ₹12–13 lakh, with 8,911 vacancies chasing just 5,834 candidates — a demand-surplus market, not a salary slump. What's true is that the qualification alone doesn't fix a number: employer type, specialization, city, and experience each move it substantially, and experience moves it the most.

Ranges are indicative market benchmarks compiled from ICAI campus placement disclosures and salary-tracking platforms as of September 2026 — actual pay depends heavily on employer, specialization and city.

By employer type

The same experience, very different pay

1Big 4

Big 4 (Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG)

Audit, Tax, Advisory, Deals

Freshers typically start around ₹8.5–12 LPA in audit or tax, and ₹10–15 LPA in Deals, Valuations, or Advisory. Packages rise to roughly ₹23L+ at 4–5 years, ₹30–40 LPA as Senior Manager by year 8–10, and ₹40–80 LPA on the Director/Partner track beyond that.

Trade-off: Steep learning curve and strong brand value, but a demanding pace, especially in the first few years.
2Industry

Industry & corporate roles

FP&A, Controllership, Finance Manager, CFO

Fresher packages in MNCs and large Indian companies commonly fall in the ₹10–25 LPA range depending on the company. Finance Manager roles at 4–6 years sit around ₹15–25 LPA, and CFO roles at large companies can reach ₹50L–1Cr+, with MNC subsidiary CFOs going higher still.

Trade-off: Often steadier hours than Big 4, with pay that compounds well once you reach leadership finance roles.
3PSU / Bank

PSUs & public sector banks

Recruited via ICAI campus placements

PSUs regularly compete with or beat Big 4 fresher offers through ICAI's campus placement programme — the highest domestic offer in a recent cycle came from Power Finance Corporation. Pay structures are more standardised, with steady increments and strong job security.

Trade-off: Slower pace of promotion than Big 4 or high-growth industry roles, but predictable and secure.
4Practice

Independent practice

Own firm · No salary ceiling

Income here isn't a salary at all — it's client fees, and it builds slowly in the early years before compounding once a practice has an established client base. There's no fixed ceiling, but also no guaranteed floor; income depends entirely on the practice built.

Trade-off: Highest long-term upside of any path, alongside the highest early-year uncertainty.
What actually moves the number

Experience matters, but it isn't the only lever

Two CAs at the same experience level can be ₹10 lakh apart depending on these factors. Specialization and city, in particular, tend to matter as much as years worked.

  • Employer type — Big 4, industry, PSU, or independent practice
  • Specialization — tax, M&A, forensics, and IB/PE roles command a premium
  • City — metro packages regularly run well above Tier-2 city benchmarks
  • Attempt count — first-attempt clears tend to draw stronger starting offers
  • Rank — All India Rank holders often start 20–50% above the average
